June/July 2010 Archive...

Friday 4th June 2010

Well the change of day of the week didn't improve the turn out by members one might have expected, especially after the course had been used to host the English Seniors Championship this week and that the course would be in excellent condition, which it was. The ground staff had made an excellent job of preparing the course and we enjoyed the benefits today. All the same, the good weather and excellent conditions didn't make for good scoring apart from one, Bob Harrison who returned 40 points, no one else managed better that 35. John Thwaites, Gordon White & Allan Benson returned 35 points apiece. No 2's recorded today

Saturday 5th June 2010

A message from John Denwood, the Club Captain

I attended the prize giving for the recently held English Amateur Seniors Championships which were part held at Eden. Both the EGU and the competitors were impressed with the course and grateful for the welcome and assistance they received. They asked that I passed this message on to you all together with their thanks for allowing the competitors courtesy of the course. A plaque commemorating the event was presented to the club which will be displayed in the clubhouse.

Monday 7th June 2010

The monthly team event, a Yellowball stableford was played today, 33 members, 11 teams took part in the event and for a change there were no last minute cancellations. Played in warm pleasant condition with the odd shower the team of Ray Arthurs, David Blackett & John Ross were declared the winner with 86 points, runners up were George Bullamore, Gordon White & Jack Carruthers with 84 points

A visitor, a past member of the Mallards, Rob Kelly, popped in at lunch time to say hello to his old fellow members of the Mallards, Rob as most of you will remember left a few years back and moved to Cornwall, he is currently a members of Staddon Heights Golf Club near Plymouth

An early reminder that our normal playing day of Thursday 17th June will be played on Wednesday 16th June at 9am instead.

Wednesday 9th June 2010

Leaving Eden Golf club at 9am this morning a party of 30 members of the Mallards set of for their annual 'away day', this year to Appleby Golf Course. Arriving around 10am we were greeted by the staff then enjoyed a bacon roll and tea or coffee. Around 11am the members set off to play a stableford competition in very wild windy conditions, this made the scoring difficult as the majority were to find out. The course was thoroughly enjoyed by all and the greens were in immaculate condition. So to the winners. With 35 points John Morton-Carruthers was 1st, two members returned 34 points, David Dalglish taking second place from Jim Lyndon on a card play off. 4th was Harry Martin with 33 points. David Hoggard returned the only 2 of the day, but as there wasn't a 2's competition today he just had to bask in the glory of being the only member to record a 2

Thursday 10th June 2010

After yesterday's exertions around windy Appleby it was good to see that quite a number turned out to play in today's stableford competition. Played in windy conditions, not quite a strong as yesterday George Dunning returned a very good 39 points to take top spot. Runner up was John Thwaites with 38 points, Derek Smith and John Ross with 36 points each were 3rd & 4th respectively.

Wednesday 16th June 2010

We'll start with Monday's golf. A number of Mallards travelled to Maryport to play a match against the 'Bankenders', (Maryport Seniors) Not a good day for the Mallards and the howling gale we played in didn't help but as always we enjoyed the days golf and lost 4½ - 1½
Today, Wednesday, a replacement date of the 17th June was so different. Benign conditions, hot sunshine and great expectations by all to burn up the course but alas it was not to be, well for the majority that was the case. Allan Benson and Malcolm Mackenzie were the exceptions. Allan with an excellent 41 points and Malcolm with 38 points were 1st & 2nd. John Ross was 3rd, he also recorded a 2 as did new member Doug Dixon

Monday 21st June 2010

It was good to see an excellent turn out by members today. 36 took part in the 1st round of the Alex McPhee Trophy. it was also good to see a flurry of good scores today and it was no than expected in that the weather and course conditions were very good. There were no 2's today so 5 prizes were created. Derek Smith with 44 points was the winner and in order we have Gordon White 43 points, Alan Nixon & Ray Arthurs with 40 points apiece and David Slater 5th with 39 points.

The ladies Captain sent a letter of thanks to the members who assisted as starters last Tuesday and Thursday

Thursday 24 June 2010

Round 2 of the Alex McPhee stableford. Conditions not a favourable as they were on Monday, the ground seemed harder and there was a strong wind to contend with today. John Ross and Jim Samuel both returned 38 points John taking 1st place on a CPO. 3rd was Ray Arthurs with 37 points and Graham Orange was 4th with his 35 points which was top of the pile of a number of players with 35 points. Ian Melrose recorded the only 2 of the day.

Derek Smith won the Alex McPhee Trophy, so congratulations to Derek

Monday 28th June 2010

The 3rd round of the medal 'Eclectic' was played today. A good turn out of 34 members took part, playing in good condition, hot, little wind and a lot of run on the fairways scoring was not as hot as one would have expected, only one score managed to break 90 gross. So with a net 67 Tom Skead was the winner, Joe Hardon with a net 69 was runner up, 3rd and 4th were David Slater & Alan Best with net 72, the rest were net 75 upwards. no 2's recorded today.

Thursday 1st July 2010

Match time again, this time the match is at home against Hexham Seniors, a biannual event. On a cooler showery afternoon 8 matches took to the 'field' the result being a tie, 4 matches so a happy result for all.

Monday 5th July 2010

A breezy morning for the players taking part in today's medal competition, which caused some mayhem for a few members who racked up double figure scores with 10's 11's and 12's recorded. Still the best score was a net 70 recorded by David Slater, runner up was David Hoggard with a net 71, a couple of 73's and a 74 gave Gordon White, George Bullamore & Harry Martin, 3rd, 4th and 5th respectively. No 2's recorded yet again.

Thursday 8th July 2010

Captains Day

An excellent turn out for the Mallards Captains Day. Playing in warm sunshine and very blustery conditions the members played a stableford competition with a nearest the pin on the 9th hole, target golf at the halfway point (including refreshments) and a 9 hole putting competition. Following the competition the members enjoyed and evening meal.
Harry Martin with a fine 39 points was the winner of the Captains prize and the Ian Carruthers 'Slippery Frog Trophy', runner up was Alan Nixon and 3rd was Francis Fitzpatrick. The nearest the pin was won by David Higham. The target golf was won by Chris Small and the putting competition was won by Tom Skead. On the day the Captain welcomed Arnold Snowball, a Past Captain of the Mallards, who joined the members for the evening meal.

Monday 12th July 2010

Match day, this time against the Maryport Seniors, played in pleasant conditions the Mallards returned a nice win 4½ - 1½.

Wednesday 14th July 2010

Eden Seniors Open

A pleasant warm day with the odd shower for those taking part in today's stableford competition which was won by Morris Hope & Joe Calvert from Brampton Golf Club with 45 points.

Thursday 15th July 2010

Being the seniors open on Wednesday it was a relaxed day for the members today. It was what has become an annual event, a 9 hole stableford on the Hadrian's Course. Those who set off first did so in heavy rain and wind but within 45 minutes or so the rain and wind vanished and warm sunshine with us for the rest of the day. Robert Waite and Malcolm Mackenzie both recorded 19 points with Robert taking 1st place on a CPO. Robert also recorded the only 2 of the day.

Monday 19th July 2010

A wet wet morning especially for the later starters who endured light rain for the duration of their respective round of golf. 35 members played in today's stableford competition. John Ross and David McCulloch both returned 37 points with John taking top spot on a CPO, David was runner up. There being no 2's recorded today 3rd 4th & 5th prizes went to Peter Shakespeare 36 pts, Jim Samuel 35 pts & David Slater 34 pts.

Thursday 22nd July 2010

The dreaded medal and an 'Eclectic' was the order of the day, medal is not a favourite competition among the members, especially today as it meant playing from the 'white' tees. Playing in a strong breeze scoring was high and as such there were no increases in handicaps, only decreases and that didn't apply to anyone today. Peter Gouge, a fairly new member recorded his first win with a net 75, then there was a number of players with net a 76 the best of which following a CPO were David Slater, John Ross and Gordon White. There were no 2's and 23 members too part on the competition.

Monday 26th July 2010

It was good to see so may members out playing. 42 turned for today's stableford competition. Playing in fairly calm conditions with prolonged light showers there were quite a few good scores. Our Captain Ian Melrose returned the best score with 42 points, David Slater was runner up with 41 points. Jim Samuel and Brian Norgrove both returned 38 points, Jim taking 3rd place on a CPO, 5th was John Morton-Carruthers with 37 points. Yet again none of the players managed to record a 2.

Thursday 29th July 2010

Match time again. Today the Mallards entertained the seniors from Whickham Golf Club and is normal with this fixture, Whickham are a difficult side to overcome but the Mallards held fast and enjoyed a halved match which maintains this season home record.
