First of all
lets make a fleeting mention of the Mallards match against Maryport, they lost,
but enjoyed the day out and missed the rain.
On to today, and a reduced field for the stableford competition due to a
number of members playing knockout matches. On a wild windy day David Slater ran
out today's winner with a good 36 points followed by Jim Lyndon & David
McCulloch both with 35 points and 4th Graham Orange the best of a few members
returning 34 points.
Thursday 4th June 2009
Today was a
stableford competition played in good golfing conditions warm with little or no
wind, so it was good to see some of the higher handicap players leading the
leader board so to speak. With an excellent 40 points David McCulloch recorded
his for win for some time, Rob Woodland was runner up with 38 points. David
Slater, also with 38 points was third. There was 2 other members with 38 points.
Gordon Milne recorded the only 2 of the day
Oh and in passing the Mallards lost their match against Hexham on Monday
Monday 8th June 2009
An excellent
turnout today, 36 members played in the second round of the medal 'Eclectic' and
in good golfing conditions warm with a gentle breeze. Roger Rees once again
returned an excellent score as did quite a few members today. So Roger with a
net 66 took 1st place, Graham Orange with a net 72 was runner up. Gordon Milne
with a net 73 was 3rd, he also recorded the only 2 of the day. Rob Woodland was
4th

An excellent
day out was enjoyed by the members who travelled to Ponteland Golf Club for the
annual 'Away Day' On arrival at 10am we were warmly welcomed with a coffee/tea
and a bacon roll, except one who had scrambled egg! At 11am we set of to enjoy a
round of golf played over an excellently prepared golf course which the members
thoroughly enjoyed. Following the golf they enjoyed an evening meal before
returning home at 5pm. Winner on the day was Jim Cruddas with 37 points, next
best were a number of scores of 33 points the best of which was Ian castle
followed by John Ross, Jim Samuel and Sandy Thorburn settled for the 4th and 5th
places. The only 2 of the day was recorded by Donald Edgar, sadly there were no
prizes for 2's today
Monday 22nd June 2009
Round 1 of
the Alex McPhee Trophy and a pleasant
day for golf, this was reflected in some good high scores. David Blackett
with an excellent 42 points ran out the comfortable winner with David Dalglish
on 40 points as runner up. With a number of players on 39 points Gordon Milne
and Donald Edgar were 3rd & 4th respectively.
Thursday 25th June 2009
Round 2 of
the Alex McPhee Trophy and another pleasant day for golf, with a few
members in with a shout of taking the trophy, scoring was steady and though Rob
Woodland was today's winner with 40 points the winner of the trophy was Gordon
Milne with another steady round of 39 points for a combined total of 78 points
and runners up place. Peter Shakespeare was 3rd with 38 points. David Dalglish's
37 points wasn't quite enough for the trophy top spot, a couple of holes on the
run in cost him the chance of the trophy, his combined total was 77 points.
Gordon White recorded the only 2 of the day.
Monday 29th June 2009
The 3rd round
of the medal 'Eclectic' was played today. The day started warm and got hot
especially for the later starters. Surprisingly, considering the ground was firm
and ball was travelling a long way, scoring was very difficulty with the
exception of Roger Rees who returned a gross 71, net 67 to take 1st prize. David
McCulloch with a net 72 was runner up and Gordon White, 73 and Jim Samuel 74
were 3rd & 4th. Eddie Robson recorded the only 2 of the day
Thursday 2nd July 2009
A rather
small field entered today's competition and know doubt the heat of the day
resulted in a number of cancellations. The heat, probably the hottest of the
year so far, was a topic of conversation. Still 20 members braved the heat and
played and know doubt drunk gallons of water on the way round. Gordon Milne with
38 points was the day's winners with Andy McCann runner up with 37 and Ian
Melrose in 3rd with 36. Graham Orange & Derek Smith, shared the 2's pot
Monday 6th July 2009
Not exactly
the members favourite type competition, a medal, was the order of the day, but
there were some good returns none the less. With excellent scores of net 68's
Francis Fitzpatrick was declared the winner on a CPO from Gordon Milne who was
the runner up. Joe Hardon and Douglas Pringle were 3rd & 4th respectively. There
were no 2's today
Thursday 9th July 2009
Today was the
Mallards Captain's Day, also the Ian Carruthers 'Slippery Frog Trophy'. 32
members turned out to play the stableford competition, enjoy a putting
competition and via for prizes for a nearest to the pin on a par 3 and the
nearest to a centre line with a tee shot on the 18th fairway, followed by an
evening meal.
A very pleasant day was enjoyed by all and the day stayed pretty well fine with
the exception of a shower of rain that caught the final two groups on the 18th
fairway.
Ray Arthurs and Jim Samuel returned scores of 41 points each, ray winning the
trophy and the Captain's Prize on a card play off. Jim took second place
followed by George Dunning in 3rd with 38 points also on a card play off from
Joe Hardon.
The nearest the pin prize went to Stewart Taylor, The nearest the centre line
was shared by Ernie Henderson & Peter Shakespeare who both managed to land a
ball on the line. The putting competition was shared by Jim Shaw, Mike Cross &
Ian Melrose, each with 17 putts.
At this point we would like to thank Arnold Snowball, who make a donation to the
Mallards towards prizes. Arnold was captain of the Mallards in 2002 an now
resides in Wiltshire but still follows the fortunes of the Mallards
Monday 13th July 2009
The Mallards
were hosts to Maryport seniors in a match, Maryport to the honours on the day.
Wednesday 15th July 2009
Eden Seniors
Open was the main event of the day and an excellent day for all who took part. A
list of the prize winner is show on the Seniors Open Results 2009 Page.
Thursday 16th July 2009
A relaxing
format of golf for the Mallards today, an easy 9 hole competition on the
Hadrian's Course, not that one could call Hadrian's easy. Following on form
yesterdays Seniors Open only 21 members turned out to play. Apart from a
torrential downpour midway through the round is was pleasant out. The best score
of the day, 18 points was returned by Sandy Thorburn, David Slater was the best
of a number of players with 17th points.
Monday 20th July 2009
A very
blustery day made conditions difficult for the members taking part in today's
stableford competition. 30 members took part today, and with the start of the
school summer holidays, grand-parenting duties are taking over. A good turn out
never the less. Jack Carruthers home for the summer was a comfortable winner
today with 40 points. Cyril Hankey, with 37 points was runner up, first time in
a very log time Cyril has been in the prizes. 3rd & 4th were David Slater & Rob
Woodland with 36 points each. Jim Cruddas recorded the only 2 of the day.
Thursday 23rd July 2009
An 'eclectic'
medal was the order of the day, not the most enjoyable of competitions for the
members. A relatively small field enjoyed a pleasant days' golf, just 20 members
turning out to play. Roger Rees on his first outing for a few weeks took the top
spot again with an excellent gross 71, net 68, David Blackett with a net 72 was
runner up, Jim Samuel was 3rd. No 2's recorded today.
Oh and on a lighter note, it is reported that one member, having a poor day,
came down the last, landed in the greenside bunker and struggled to exit from
the same eventually pitching a foot from the pin after 12 shots, being
superstitious, it is rumoured that he missed the putt to avoid a 13 on his card
and recorded a 14. Oh and he also recorded a 12 on the 5th, Tuff day!!!
Monday 27th July 2009
A very
blustery day, with frequent showers during today's stableford competition. 26
members played and the weather condition were reflected in the scores with the
best return of the day being 36 points by John Thwaites, runner up was David
Blackett with 35 points and 3rd Graham Orange also with 35 points. John Ross was
the best of a number of players with 34 points to take 4th place. Donald Edgar
recorded the only 2 of the day. He chipped in at the 2nd.
