The Mallards
entertained members from Hexham Golf Club seniors. The Mallards lost the match
by 4½ - 3½
Wednesday 4th June 2008
A bright and early start for a number of members, it was the Mallards annual
away day. A coach party of 37 left the golf club car park at 8.30am to travel to
Matfen Hall, near Hexham. On arrival, coffee and bacon rolls were enjoyed by all
and at 11am we set off to play a stableford competition. Unusually we played two
separate 9 hole courses both so different form each other,
so needless to say scoring was difficult. The best scores were two members with
34 points, Gordon Milne & John Mason, Ian Castle with 32 points was next best
then it was 30 points or less for the rest. For all the difficulties it was a very pleasant
day out with plenty of sunshine. Oh, 2's were recorded by Douglas Pringle, Robert
Waite & John Mason.
Any member of the Mallards attending the funeral of
Trevor, it will be acceptable to wear the Mallards tie

Obviously the
events of Wednesday's away day was more than enough for a majority of the
members judging by the turnout to play in today's competition. Even a couple
turned up and decided at the last moment they were to knackered to go out a
play. Never the less a few members did play today, all 15 of us!. Alan Nixon and
Sandy Thorburn both returned 36 points. Alan taking top place on a card play
off. Sandy had the only 2 of the day.

A team event
today, well for most, unfortunately there seems to be one on each occasion of a
team event that fails to turn up without giving notice to the captain or his
team members. Anyway for those that did, today's 'Yellowball' stableford was
enjoyed by all. Ian Melrose, John Carruthers & Ray Arthurs obviously put on a
good display, comfortably winning with 81 points, 7 shots better than the
runners up, Joe Hardon, Alan Nixon & Ken Clark
Thursday 12th June 2008
Seems to be
that Scottie, (Derek Scott) is in a run of good form. With a net 64 he was a
good 8 shots clear of the field in today's medal. David McCulloch was runner up
with a net 72. A poor turn out, just a meagre 24 members played in the
competition. No 2's recorded today. Scottie has scored points in the last 5
rounds of competition and with his run of good form he has jumped to 3rd in the
order of merit

A great day
weather wise for the members travelling to Maryport to play a match against the
Bankenders, Maryport Seniors, but not a good result at the end of the day, the
Mallards lost 4½ - 1½.
Worth the trip for the fun of playing and the good company of our hosts.
Thursday 19th June 2008
A wild an
windy day with heavy showers, Well the heavy showers didn't last too long but
long enough for half a dozen to walk in. 21 members did complete their round
today and surprising there was some decent scores returned. John Ross with 40
points was the winner, Rob Woodland with 39 points was runner up and Graham
Orange with 37 was third. Quite a few members then followed with 36 points.
David McCulloch & Gordon Milne share the 2's pot today.

After the
weekend rains it turned out to be a very pleasant morning of sunshine for the
members playing in today's stableford competition, which was the 1st round of
the Alex McPhee trophy, a 36 hole competition. 36 members played and with 38
points apiece Francis Fitzpatrick & Graham Orange were 1st and 2nd respectively.
Tom Skead & Andy McCann were 3rd and 4th with 37 points. Not quite the record
for the number of 2's in any one competition but 5 recorded today was very good.
Allan Benson, Ernie Henderson, Michael Cross, Tom Skead & Gordon Milne shared
the pot.
Thursday 26th June 2008
Round 2 of
the Alex McPhee Trophy, and a wild wild day with sudden heavy showers. Following
on from round 1 Francis Fitzpatrick put together another good round. Second
round score of 37 points combined with his 1st round 38 points was enough for
Francis to win today and win the Alex McPhee Trophy. Andy McCann added a second
round of 37 points to his first round of 37 points to be runner up overall and
runner up today. Robert Waite recorded the only 2 of the day
Monday 30th June 2008
The members
played the 3rd round of the medal 'Eclectic' today. It was a nice change that it
was a pleasant day for golf, a bit of sunshine with a good breeze. 30 m3mbers
played today. Graham Orange and Sandy Thorburn tied for first place both with
net 72's, Graham taking top spot on a card play off. Roger Rees was 3rd and Ian
Melrose was 4th. Malcolm Mackenzie and David Dalglish shared the 2's pot.
Thursday 3rd July 2008
The members played a stableford competition today. On a pleasant and very warm
afternoon only a small field of 25 took part in the competition. Graham Orange
seems to be on a hot run at the moment, with another good score of 40 points he
was pipped in the end by Jim Lyndon, who returned a good score of 41 points. Joe
Hardon & Brain Norgrove were 3rd and 4th respectively. No player managed
to record a 2 today.
A reminder that it will be
Captain's Day on Thursday 10th July 2008.

During a
morning of sunshine and showers the members played a medal competition today.
Tom Gordon with a fine net 70 was today's winner, runner up with a net 71
was Douglas Pringle. Derek Smith and Jim Samuel were 3rd and 4th respectively
with net 72's, Derek also recording the only 2 of the day.
Thursday 10th July 2008 - Captains day
With a very
wet morning it was doubtful as to whether or not we would start the Captains Day
competition. But as start time drew nearer the weather cleared and play we did.
Surprisingly the course was in reasonably good competition with just a couple of
greens suffering an excess of water. The conditions certainly didn't stop some
good scoring, the top ten scoring 35 points or better. Ian castle with 42 points
won the Captains Prize and the 'Slippery Frog' Trophy, Douglas Pringle with 39
points was runner up and Jim Cruddas with 38 points was 3rd.
In addition to the stableford competition there was a 'nearest the pin' on the
13th green, won by Ian Clark, Ian also won the 'nearest the centre line' on the
10th fairway. David Blackett won the 9 hole putting competition. Following the
competition the members enjoyed a evening meal followed by the presentation of
prizes, which, on this occasion were presented by Arnold Snowball, a past
captain and member of the Mallards who was visiting the area.
Monday 14th July 2008
The Mallards
entertained Maryport seniors, the Bankenders, in a match today. Seems all had
interesting matches and the result favoured the home team which as it turned out
was a reverse of the away match against Maryport

EDEN SENIORS OPEN
On a cool
blustery day 166 golfers played in today's Senior Open and for once a
partnership from the Senior Section of Eden Golf Club were victorious. Ian
Melrose & Brain McLauchlan returned an excellent 44 points. A full list of prize
winners is published on the Seniors Open Results 2008 page
Thursday 17th July 2008
Following on
from yesterday's Seniors Open, today the members played a relaxing 9 hole
stableford competition on the Hadrian's course. Highlight of the day was a hole
in one by George Dunning on the short 7th. Sadly due to the slope of the green
George and his partners did not have the pleasure of seeing the ball go into the
hole and it was only following a search that they discovered it in the hole.
Even a five pointer for his hole in one was not good enough to take him into the
prizes. Ian Melrose continued his good run of golf and following on from his win
in the Seniors Open he won today's competition with and excellent 23 points.
Roger Rees with 19 points was runner up and David McCulloch with 17 points was
3rd.
Monday 21st July 2008
Well a decent
day's weather and the members turn out in numbers to play and produce some
decent scores. On what turned out to be a pleasant sunny day 42 members played
in today's stableford competition. Sandy Thorburn with 43 points was today's
winner. Gordon Milne with 41 points was runner up and with 38 points Alan Best &
Douglas Pringle were 3rd & 4th respectively. Yet again Derek Smith managed to
produce a 2 but on this occasion had to share the spoils with John
Morton-Carruthers.
On a more serious note it is with regret that the committee inform members
than John Oliver, a past member of the Mallards, died on Saturday 19th July
2008.
Thursday 24th July 2008
It was the
monthly medal 'Eclectic' today and playing the extra length form the white tees
reflected in the scoring today. Never the less let us not detract from an
excellent win for David McCulloch who went from propping all up on Monday to
hitting the top today. David return a comfortable net 71, Derek Smith with a net
73 was runner up, Derek also recoded the only 2 of the day, chipping in on the
9th. Ken Clark and Francis Fitzpatrick were 3rd and 4th respectively
Monday 28th July 2008
The hottest
day of the year so far to be playing golf. 36 members turned out to play on
today's stableford competition and there were some excellent scores. None more
so than those recoded by Tom Gordon and Derek Smith, both with 42 points. Tom
being awarded top spot on a card play off. Ken Clark and Gordon White with 40 &
39 points were 3rd & 4th respectively, Gordon White & Sandy Thorburn shared the
2's pot, both recording their 2 on the 13th hole.

Final home
match of the season played out today against the seniors from Whickham Golf
Club. An enjoyable afternoon for all who took part, the rain staying away
virtually until the end, the last group unfortunately suffering a heavy shower
while palying the final hole. A comfortable win for the boys from Whickham
